2014 LEGISLATIVE UPDATE:

On Tuesday, May 20th, Governor Mark Dayton signed legislation that will fund construction of a new Bell Museum of Natural History and Planetarium. This new facility will mark the northern gateway to the University of Minnesota's St. Paul campus on the southwest corner of Larpenteur Ave and Cleveland Ave. Click here to view the Pre-design Update ________________________________________________

How can teachers use data and virtual environments to help students infer knowledge that sticks? How do we build learning environments and curriculum that capitalize on this potential? Whether students are touring the universe or taking a trip through the human heart, immersion, data visualization and interactivity are powerful tools for discovery and learning.

Organized through TIES, a K-16 group of educators is tackling this challenge with GeoDomes. Students engage with interactive data visualizations inside dome environments that mimic the natural spherical perspective of human vision, creating immersion for greater retention. Minnesota's regional GeoDome network shares costs, resources and programming opportunities, with a collaborative focus on teaching and learning in both fixed and portable domes. Current members include:

  • Bell Museum of Natural History (Minneapolis)
  • Como Elementary School Planetarium (St Paul)
  • Jackson Middle School Observatory (Champlin)
  • Journey Museum (Rapid City, SD)
  • Mankato East High School Planetarium  (Mankato)
  • Mayo High School Planetarium (Rochester)
  • Minnesota State University Moorhead Planetarium (Moorhead)
  • Southwest Minnesota State University Planetarium (Marshall)
  • University of Minnesota Duluth Planetarium (Duluth)
  • University of North Dakota College of Education (Grand Forks, ND)
  • University of Wisconsin-River Falls Planetarium (River Falls, WI)
